With temperatures dropping below freezing these winter days, water meters and pipes are at risk of freezing, which can cause bursts and expensive repairs. It is the user's responsibility to protect their meter to prevent damage to the meter itself and to their internal system.
Here are the main steps to take:

  1. Isolate the meter and exposed pipes
Cover the meter and exposed pipes with specific insulating materials such as expanded polystyrene or thermal sleeves or jackets, avoiding rags, fabrics, or fiberglass which absorb moisture and worsen the freezing. Also protect the meter pit and/or niche.
  2. Monitor and maintain
Especially on nights at risk of freezing, keep a tap slightly open to let a trickle of water run. Regularly check the meter dial to promptly detect any damage.
  3. Second homes in the mountains
For secondary homes, especially in the mountain areas served by Como Acqua, where freezing temperatures are more intense and prolonged, take a few additional precautions. Completely close the main stopcock downstream (the one closest to your property) of the meter, drain the entire plumbing system by opening all taps. Properly insulate the meter with moisture-resistant thermal materials and, if possible, check it periodically to avoid surprises.
  4. Sign up for the Como Water Customer Portal
If your meter is a smart meter, sign up for the Como Water Customer Portal To monitor consumption remotely.
