Enrico Pezzoli, Spokesperson for the Integrated Water Service Operators Network: “Drinking from the tap poses no danger; on the contrary, it is a green behavior to be encouraged.".
We are considering legal action for causing a false alarm”

“It is my duty to reassure the citizens of Lombardy, who have been disturbed by a sensational fake news story. The water coming out of the taps in our region presents no risk to health.
”Stating the contrary means causing completely unjustified alarm, taking on serious both civil and criminal responsibilities." The reply from Eng. Enrico is clear.
Pezzoli, spokesperson for Water Alliance – Acque di Lombardia, regarding the publication of alarming data on the quality of public water by Greenpeace, including through various local and national media outlets. The information provided by the 13 managers of the Integrated Water Service, who are part of the Water Alliance – Acque di Lombardia network and collaborate in the name of absolute transparency that characterizes a public service dedicated to protecting an essential right of the citizenry, has been completely misrepresented.

All utility operators have provided the relevant information, which relates almost exclusively to raw groundwater. However, it is a gross mistake to confuse this water with the water we all drink! Before reaching the tap, as should be common knowledge, it actually undergoes purification treatments precisely regulated by current standards. In particular, as a precautionary measure, all water has been treated for years—for example—with activated carbon filtration systems to address PFAS (although legal limits for these substances were introduced by Legislative Decree 18/2023, which provides for their entry into force in February 2026).

It is therefore to be categorically ruled out that the public drinking water consumed in Lombardy falls outside the standards not only of current law, but also of the effective protection of citizens“ health. ”We are dismayed by the insinuation that the water we bring into homes is dangerous: it is a wrong and misleading message,“ Pezzoli adds. ”On the contrary, its consumption by citizens should be encouraged: tap water is perfectly safe and helps reduce both plastic consumption and household expenses.”.
